Sometimes when people get saved, they find it difficult to grasp what their purpose as a Christian is. While this struggle is common among new believers, it bothers some more than others. You may have even asked, ‘Why can’t I figure out what I am suppose to do?’ Eventually, you’ll know that you struggle to find your purpose as a believer because you are seeking man’s approval over God’s approval.

By heavily relying on other people to tell you what your purpose is, you are seeking approval from man, not from God. Even though we all often want our loved ones to approve the direction we’re heading, God has a unique purpose for each of us. But many of us have no clue what this purpose means for us specifically.

When you set your focus entirely on gaining God’s approval, that’s the first step in understanding your unique purpose in life. Genuinely seeking God’s approval above man’s approval is pleasing to God. And He will begin to lead you into the purpose that He has for your life!

How To Seek God’s Approval Above Man’s Approval

Relinquish the desire for man’s approval, then wholeheartedly begin seeking God’s approval. As a result, God will lead you to your purpose! Now I know what you’re thinking, “Whoa Dr. Dodgens, this is pretty simple to grasp”.

You’re right; it is! However, comprehension is usually more simple than implementation. And this topic of seeking God’s approval above man’s approval is no exception. When people are brought into the mix is when it becomes a challenge. Unfortunately, friends, significant others, etc., and even pastors can unintentionally hinder us from seeking God’s approval before theirs.

Other People’s Influences

Obviously, we know people that are bad influences in our lives. So if we do things to earn their approval, then we are not seeking God’s approval above man’s approval. That’s pretty clear to most of us.

But what about the Godly people in our lives? You know – all the people I mentioned above, plus family who can unintentionally mislead you. Each of these groups of people may think that they know what God would want you to do.

For example, they may suggest joining more groups at church, stop shopping so much. Or even spend more time with family to earn God’s approval. But even if you do all those things, their approval is NOT the same as God’s approval.

Although the suggestions that these people made are great, they are not God’s will for your life. After all, only God knows your purpose, right? Because of these individuals’ influence in your life, you may feel that it’s important that they think you’re doing God’s will. Even if that means neglecting God’s will altogether.

Sadly, the moment we shift our priority from seeking God’s approval to focusing on man’s approval, we will be further from God’s purpose for our lives. To reinforce this point, here’s a scripture:

It can be so tempting, can’t it? We want God’s approval, but man’s approval gives us instant gratification, which often makes us feel fetter than receiving God’s approval.

Let’s each decide to seek God’s approval over the approval of man. That way, we can fulfill the purpose that He has for our lives. You should know though that you may be rejected by some. But if you are accepted by the One, you have all you need. Seek God’s approval above man’s approval and stay faithful. Because in the end, you’ll be more in touch with the purpose that God has for your life.
